UCAM commemorates 'The Reign of Alfonso X the Wise'
UCAM carries on with the events in tribute to the figure of the King, to commemorate the 800th anniversary of his birth, with activities organised by five of its degrees, such as a lecture on the Kingdom of Murcia during his rule, a medieval fencing and chess tournament, and a tasting of typical dishes of the period.
This morning UCAM held the event 'The Reign of Alfonso X', as part of the activities that have been programmed throughout this year on the occasion of the 800th anniversary of the King's birth.
Degrees in Early Childhood Education and Primary Education of UCAM organised the lecture 'The Kingdom of Murcia in the time of Alfonso X', by the expert in Medieval History, José Marcos García Isaac, who has defined the passage of the King through Murcia as "transcendental":
"We must bear in mind that this city was the first great incorporation that Alfonso, while still an Infante, achieved for the Crown of Castile; that is why throughout his life he was going to have a great connection with this entire territory".
He also pointed out that the current Region of Murcia is the "direct heir" of the Kingdom he founded. "In general, he is a monarch whose reign, although not very brilliant in political terms, did have an incredible cultural scope".
The degrees in Tourism and Sports and Exercise Sciences have held medieval fencing and chess tournaments, the latter with a giant chessboard and the collaboration of the Educajedrez Association. Moreover, students of Gastronomy have prepared typical Medieval dishes, such as mead, flaó, panellets, hazelnut and coffee polvorones and pumpkin soup with cheese.
A promotor of higher education
The aim of these initiatives is to reflect on the figure and legacy of Alfonso X, who was the driving force behind higher education in the Region of Murcia. José Luis Mendoza, president of UCAM, has already highlighted the figure of Alfonso X for his great contribution to the history of Spain: "He was the promoter of higher education in the Region of Murcia, the Order of Preachers (Dominicans) being those who established it", underlining that the Wise King "in view of the great knowledge he found in Murcia, promoted the coexistence between science and Christian faith, which is based on love".
