SCS world congress highlights the role of strength training for sports performance and health

The event, which brought together more than 350 world experts at UCAM, concluded with a posthumous recognition of José Luis Mendoza, founder of the University, for his outstanding contribution to high-level sports training and physical activity

For three days, the Universidad Católica San Antonio de Murcia (UCAM) has been the world stage of strength and conditioning training, hosting the 7th Annual Conference of the Strength and Conditioning Society (SCS). This event brought together more than 350 attendees at the Los Jerónimos Campus, including some of the leading international experts in the field. The main sessions were held in the Temple of the Monastery of Los Jerónimos, and the practical workshops were held in the state-of-the-art facilities of the UCAM Sports Centerthe  Centre for Research in High Performance Sports (UCAM CIARD) and UCAM HiTech

The closing ceremony was characterised by emotion and recognition of the commitment to academic and sporting excellence. In this context, a posthumous award was presented to José Luis Mendoza, UCAM founder, for his involvement and firm commitment to quality training and research excellence in the field of sports, especially in high performance and physical conditioning. María Dolores García, UCAM president and wife of the founder, accepted the award and dedicated some heartfelt words of thanks, recalling that ‘his legacy continues to be a guide in our mission to promote healthy living. His passion for sport and his conviction about the benefits of physical exercise for people of all ages and conditions motivates us to keep going’. 

In addition to this tribute, distinctions have been awarded to professionals of enormous prestige such as José Antonio Carrillo, national walking coach, awarded for his extensive and brilliant career, coaching Olympic athletes from Atlanta 1996 to Paris 2024, at the latter his pupil Álvaro Martín won two medals (bronze and gold). One of its athletes, Miguel Ángel López, European and world champion, accompanied Carrillo at the award ceremony, which was one of the most emotional moments of the event.  

Francesc Cos, a physical trainer with an outstanding international career in football, was also recognised for his work with renowned teams such as FC Barcelona and Manchester City. Cos received video congratulations from players and coaches he has worked with, such as Andrés Iniesta, Rodri, Rúben Dias, Bernardo Silva and Pep Guardiola

As part of the SCS annual awards, Jordan J. Godfrey was honoured as 'Emerging Coach of the Year', while Melissa Prieto won 'Female coach of the Year'. The 'Coach of the Year' award went to Chris Chapman, who stood out for his innovative approach and ability to apply the latest advances in sports science to strength training. 

The conference also included scientific awards for the best poster and oral presentations. Ana Moradell Fernández won the SCS Young Investigator Award while Evelien Van Roie received the SCS Applied Science Award. 

The 7th Annual Conference of the Strength and Conditioning Society was an excellent opportunity for the students of the Faculty of Sport of the UCAM to learn from the greatest international references in the field of high performance sports. During the closing ceremony, it was announced that the next edition will be held in Oslo, Norway
