The UCAM Symphony Orchestra enjoyed tremendous success with a superb vocal line-up led by Plácido Domingo
The XXI Grand New Year Gala at Zarzuela (XXI Gran Gala de Zarzuela de Año Nuevo), organised by Sinfolírica and sponsored by UCAM on its 25th anniversary in benefit of Cáritas was presided over by Queen Sofía of Spain. Great artists gathered at the National Auditorium (Auditorio Nacional) all of whom brought the event to a closing with the song Canto a Murcia.
The audience's resounding applause and cheers echoed throughout the gala, in which the Spanish lyrical genre resounded impressively thanks to great Spanish voices, who performed, among other pieces, Los Gerifaltes, El Bateo, La Leyenda del Beso, La Tabernera del Puerto, El Dúo de la Africana, Los Gavilanes, La Alegría de la Huerta and María la O. The gala, which was organised by the Fundación Sinfolírica with the sponsorship of UCAM, was presided over by Queen Sofía of Spain.
Conductor Borja Quintas was in charge of directing the gala, in which the Symphony Orchestra of the Universidad Católica de Murcia (of which he is the principal conductor) accompanied a large cast of excellent artists such as the sopranos Carmen Solís and Marina Monzó; mezzo-sopranos Nancy Fabiola Herrera and Cristina Faús; tenors Celso Albelo, Jorge de León and Antonio Vázquez; baritone Santos Ariño; Rubén Amoretti and Simón Orfila as basses; and violinist Elena Mikhailova. As well as the special contribution of tenor Plácido Domingo. They were accompanied by the Agrupación Coral Coslada-Madrid and the ballet company Estampas de Zarzuela.
Plácido Domingo garnered praise from the audience for his interpretation of Los Gavilanes, Marina, Maravilla and La del Soto del Parral; the most emotional moment came when the orchestra, choir and all the soloists performed El Canto a Murcia at the end, to a standing ovation of the audience.
25th anniversary of UCAM
The Gala was attended by representatives and guests of UCAM, including its rector, Josefina García. On this occasion, the Universidad Católica de Murcia has once again dedicated its efforts to the celebration of this event, always of a charitable nature, for which the president of Cáritas, Manuel Bretón, expressed his gratitude. For José Luis Mendoza, president of UCAM, the success of the event is not only artistic but, above all, charitable.
