Teresa Portela fulfils Olympic podium dream
The Spaniard with the most Olympic appearances in the history of the country puts the icing on the cake of a legendary career with her first Olympic medal. Meanwhile, the extremely young Cayetano García and Pablo Martínez won the Olympic diploma in C2 1,000m.
After 21 years at the highest professional level, being a mother and in her sixth appearance at the Olympic Games, Teresa Portela has won the first Olympic medal of her sporting career, the silver in K1 200m in Tokyo 2020.
Born in Cangas, the paddler from UCAM Canoeing Murcia and student of Food Science and Technology at said University, who already has five Olympic diplomas, has achieved the dream she has always pursued. She came in second in a very close final in which she registered a time of 38.883, behind the New Zealander Lisa Carrington (38.120) and just ahead of the Danish Emma Aastrand Jorgensen (38.901).
Teresa has previously achieved two world championships, seven European championships and has no less than 32 international medals. This medal is the jewel in the crown which the most consistent Olympic athlete in the history of our country fully deserved. This medal is the eighth one the Spanish team has achieved in the capital of the land of the rising sun.
Besides, the young Andalusian duo that make up the Spanish C2 1,000, formed by Cayetano García and Pablo Martínez, deservedly achieved a spot in the final after a very close result. They managed to finish eighth with a time of 3:41.572 and will therefore come home with an Olympic diploma for their first appearance at the Games.
