Ray Zapata finally fulfilled his dream of winning an Olympic medal. The UCAM gymnast won the silver medal for the floor routine after completing a magnificent exercise. In fact, Ray tied in score (14.933) with the Olympic gold medallist, the Israeli Artem Dolgoypat. The higher degree of difficulty of the Hebrew gymnast's exercise broke the tie.

The Spaniard evaluated his options very well and calmed his nerves to the point that he only had one small visible failure in one of the landings. Being the second to compete, he had to wait for his rivals to do their routines. With the exception of the Israeli, who made several clear mistakes which were not penalised as much, the rest of his rivals made major errors. Only China's Ruoteng Xiao completed his test with hardly any mistakes but with a lower degree of difficulty. Although it was enough for bronze, he was far behind the first and second placed.

With this medal, Ray Zapata finally completes his superb sporting record as he has been a medallist at the European Championships, at the World Championships, and was only missing the Olympic one. His tears of emotion on the podium after receiving the silver medal were the reflection of years and years of hard work to reach the long-desired Olympic podium.
