‘It is important to both know and put into practice the guidelines to follow in medicine, nutrition and physical activity for the prevention of cardiovascular diseases at an early age, as well as early detection to prevent pathologies from appearing,’ said José Antonio García Donaire, president of the Spanish Society of Hypertension, at the 'Preven-t'conference, co-organised by UCAM. The event was held at the Los Jerónimos Campus and was attended by healthcare professionals, professors and a large group of students.

Together with José Antonio García, María Dolores García Mascarell, UCAM president, inaugurated the conference, expressing her satisfaction at the interest shown by the students in this meeting to learn from great professionals in the field of healthcare, and José Abellán, director of the UCAM Chair of Cardiovascular Risk, who stressed that ‘investing in prevention is the most profitable thing to do, promoting a healthy lifestyle from an early age, through family and teachers, which will help reduce the risk of suffering from cardiovascular diseases’, also highlighting the role played by ‘UCAM as a promoter of these beneficial habits for health’.

Experts in medicine, psychology and nutrition have analysed the basic pillars that make up a healthy lifestyle, highlighting that they are mainly correct nutrition and physical exercise. The speakers, from clinical and university centres in the Region of Murcia and the Community of Madrid, placed special emphasis on the high consumption of tobacco among university students, especially women, as well as the poor nutrition based on fast food, almost entirely rejecting the Mediterranean diet, as stated in the 'Preven-t' study, carried out by UCAM and the Spanish Society of Hypertension. They have also warned about the dangers of some instant weight-loss diets that are disseminated on social media.

This event is part of the nationwide 'Preven-t' project, whose main objective is to raise awareness among the Spanish university population of the importance of acquiring healthy habits from a young age.
