Second Olympic silver medal for this dream generation of the Spanish women's water polo team. They already won it in London 2012 with Maica García Godoy in their ranks, and now they have won it again with the addition of another young and promising athlete from the UCAM, Irene González.

The Spaniards reached the final after an almost perfect tournament, in which they only lost in one group stage match. They won the elimination rounds against China (11-7) and Hungary (8-6) showing great dominance which made them dream of gold.

However, in the final they faced the all-powerful Americans, the same opponents as at London 2012. The Americans were invincible both in attack and defence, shattering the Spanish dream of the first-place medal. Even though at the end of the second quarter Maica García managed to place the scoreboard at 4-7, it was not enough, and the United States ended up winning 5-14.
