On the occasion of the centenary of the arrival of the Virgen de la Piedad in Cartagena, the UCAM community joined in the extraordinary procession that went through the streets of the city this Sunday. An event full of emotion and devotion that was held to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the arrival of the statue to Cartagena, a historic moment for all its inhabitants.
UCAM was present at that very special event, with a delegation led by its president, María Dolores García, who participated as a porter of the Virgin. This act symbolises the university's deep bond with the traditions and heritage of the port city, and honours the memory of the institution's founder, José Luis Mendoza, who was also a porter of the Virgen de la Piedad.
The event was widely attended by thousands of devotees who joined in a very solemn procession, where they also listened to marches performed by various musical groups from the region. The event culminated with the arrival of the Virgin at the Church of Santa María, where, on the shoulders of the UCAM delegation, the traditional Salve was sung. After that, it was taken to its chapel, from where it will leave again next Holy Monday in its long-awaited procession.
