UCAM commemorates the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women
The International Chair 'Women, Business and Sports' of UCAM has organised an event in the Temple of the Monastery of Los Jerónimos on the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women
María Jesús Bonilla Domínguez, director of the Chair, appealed for the collaboration of all people and institutions. "As a society we are failing as long as there are women who die like this. We all have a responsibility and we must reach out to put an end to this scourge. " At UCAM, the university of values, we raise a flag in support of respect, equality and freedom".
The event included a speech by the writer Marta Galatas, who shared her first-hand experience as a victim of abuse. "I had no freedom; I couldn’t be myself. I want to tell girls that they don't have to put up with it. I want them to feel that they can. If not, it isn’t love".
Antonio Alcaráz López, vice-rector of University Outreach of the Universidad Católica, referred to the commitment of UCAM towards peace and social welfare. "Violence against women is destruction of life; this is why this day is so special for UCAM. The role of women is essential in our society".
During the event, student representatives from the Degree in Primary Education read a manifesto rejecting such violence, and students from the Degree in Dance concluded the event with a performance.
