UCAM breaks the all-time record for medals at the Spanish University Championships, winning five medals in judo

Judokas from Universidad Católica, led by Olympian Alberto Gaitero, took four golds and a bronze to break the 141-gold medals record set in 2019

The Prince of Asturias Sports Centre in San Pedro del Pinatar was the venue for the Spanish University Judo Championships 2022 (CEU in Spanish) organised by UCAM, in which the host university won four gold medals and a bronze to collect 144 awards this year at the CEU, surpassing by three medals the best all-times record registered by UCAM itself in 2019.

The men's medal for the Universidad Católica went to the Olympic judoka in Tokyo 2020 Alberto Gaitero, who prevailed in the -73 kg category and won the final against Iker Uranga of the Universidad de Deusto.

In the women's category, UCAM judoka Mireia Lapuerta won gold in the -48 kg final against Eva Pérez of the Universidad Alfonso X El Sabio. In the -57 kg category, Sonia Montero dominated her last match against Carolina Rivero from the Universidad Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, also becoming a champion. Meanwhile, María Cabas won the last female medal for UCAM with her bronze in -70 kg.

These results obtained by the Universidad Católica de Murcia means the best record in the Spanish University Judo Championships, thanks to their fourth gold medal and fifth overall in the competition.

This was the sixteenth CEU of the nineteen organised this year in the region by the Universidad Católica de Murcia. An unprecedented organisational effort in the history of Spanish university sport carried out by UCAM on the occasion of its 25th anniversary. More than 200 athletes from 55 universities from all over Spain took part in the tournament.

With twenty-two Spanish University Championships completed out of the twenty-seven which will be held in the 2022 edition, UCAM remains the leader in the CEU medal table with 144 medals (97 golds, 26 silvers and 21 bronzes).
