19 UCAM athletes compete with the Spanish team in the world athletics and canoeing championships
The trials take place from 19 to 27 August in Hungary and from 23 to 27 August in Germany, with medals and places for the Paris '24 Olympics at stake
Summer is traditionally the key season for many sports disciplines on the Olympic programme, with many of the most important events, especially the continental and world championships, taking place during these months. This year, athletics and canoeing both hold their World Championships in the second half of August. Nineteen athletes linked to UCAM will take part in these tournaments, in which they will fight for medals and places for the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics.
First, it will be the turn of athletics, whose World Championships will be held in Budapest (Hungary) from 19 to 27 August, with the following UCAM athletes: in the women's category, the race walkers María Pérez (20 and 35km race walk), Raquel González (35km race walk), and Lucía Carrillo (4x100) will represent UCAM. As for the men, the Spanish team will include UCAM athletes Mohamed Katir (1,500m and 5,000m), Sergio Fernández (400m hurdles), Víctor Ruiz (3000m steeplechase), Diego García Carrera (20km race walk) and Miguel Ángel López (35km race walk).
Duisburg (Germany) will host the Canoeing World Championships (23-27 August) and eleven UCAM paddlers from the strong Spanish team will participate in it: Saúl Craviotto, Carlos Arévalo, Rodrigo Germade, Marcus Cooper, Pablo Martínez, Andía Jacome, Paco Cubelos, Cayetano García, Teresa Portela, Sara Ouzande and Íñigo Peña. In recent times, this sport has become the main source of Olympic medals for Spain, hence the importance of securing the Olympic places at stake as soon as possible.
