UCAM researchers develop a Minecraft game to teach lifesaving skills
UCAM has developed an educational video game, funded by an Ignacio Larramendi Research Grant from Fundación MAPFRE, so that students from all over Spain can learn CPR.
The Universidad Católica de Murcia (UCAM), through researcher Manuel Pardo Ríos and his team, has developed an educational video game in collaboration with Fundación MAPFRE and Letcraft Educación. This project has been funded through an Ignacio Larramendi Research Grant from Fundación MAPFRE. The video game was created on Microsoft's Minecraft Education Edition platform and is designed to teach Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) in schools and colleges.
This innovative resource is part of the Aprendiendo Juntos a Salvar Vidas (Learning Together to Save Lives) outreach programme of Fundación MAPFRE, and is available free of charge to all educational centres that request it.
This pioneering project has already been implemented throughout Spain, reaching thousands of primary and secondary school students, with plans to expand to other countries in Europe and Brazil. The inclusion of Minecraft Education Edition as an educational tool aims to improve the teaching of CPR and Basic Life Support (BLS) through an interactive and playful environment that motivates students to learn by playing.
Among the activities that can be performed in the game, students will enter the Residencia Corazón Palpitante (Heart Beating Residence) neighbourhood, where they will face various challenges, such as correctly performing CPR, applying the Heimlich manoeuvre to resolve choking, installing defibrillators in strategic locations and participating in interactions with characters that provide data and informative links.
The resource includes a complete teaching guide and a video summary to facilitate its implementation in the classroom. Both are available in Spanish and English, and the game requires educational centres to have the educational version of Minecraft (Education Edition), with an active license.
This resource is available for use through the Fundación MAPFRE website, in the Educación y Divulgación (Education and Dissemination) section, within the Aprendiendo Juntos a Salvar Vidas programme. In the Formación del alumnado (Student training) section, you can find materials and resources for three different sessions, as well as all the information necessary to install and use Aprendiendo a Salvar Vidas con Minecraft Education in the classroom.
