UCAM international students: Welcome to Murcia!

The Universidad Católica de Murcia, which this year hosts students from 115 countries – more than in previous years –, has welcomed the new students this morning.

Flags from Arab Emirates, Lebanon, Pakistan, Peru, Philippines, Israel, USA,

Belgium, Italy, Poland, Mexico, France, Brazil, Colombia, Taiwan, Egypt, etc.,

excited faces and more than 65 languages, the image and soundtrack that

best describes the UCAM International Welcome held this morning at the

BeSoccer La Condomina Stadium. Nearly a thousand new foreign students

who are studying at the Murcia and Cartagena campuses this academic year,

in official undergraduate or postgraduate programmes, continuing education

degrees or at the San Antonio Institute of Vocational Training took part in

the event, which was characterised by a multicultural, festive, and

welcoming mood.

These students are just some of the 2,300 students who will study in the

Region of Murcia this year, coming from 115 countries – mainly from Europe,

followed by America, Asia-Oceania, and Africa. To these we must add those

who will attend the international campuses and partners, with more than

7,000 foreign students in total this 2022/23
. These figures show a significant

increase in the number of international students among the UCAM university

community, as recently highlighted by different rankings, which place UCAM

among the top Spanish universities for foreigners. Thus, the U-Ranking

highlights the Universidad Católica de Murcia for its percentage of students

from other countries, with 11 points above the national average; and the

Times Higher Education, does so in international outlook in its World

University Ranking.

Internationalisation is one of the university foundations, launched by the

president, José Luis Mendoza, as an institution open to the world and which

‘has resulted in the integration of students from a very wide range of

countries in our classrooms. Despite the pandemic we have experienced,

UCAM has continued to grow, with a 6% increase in international students

this year, in addition to those on exchange programmes and research stays’,

said José Luis Mendoza García, UCAM Director of Institutional Relations. ‘We

are experiencing an atmosphere of communion and joy; this group of

students is going to enjoy Murcia and the university, and they are going to

grow a lot
’, he added.

UCAM is an economic engine for the Region. These foreign students

contribute by generating wealth, as well as giving an important international

projection to Murcia. ‘We are talking about renting accommodation, buying,

investing in leisure; sectors that are growing around student communities. We

can celebrate the intellectual, economic and, more specifically, touristic

impact
of UCAM in the Region of Murcia’, said Pablo Blesa, Vice-Rector of

International Relations and Communication of the university.

UCAM is the Spanish university with the highest number of degrees
