The Universidad Católica San Antonio de Murcia and Tranvía de Murcia have signed a new collaboration agreement aimed at further promoting research and development of sustainable mobility solutions in the Region of Murcia. María Dolores García, UCAM President, and Severiano Arias, CEO of Tranvía de Murcia, have signed the agreement consolidating the participation of the company in the Chair in Sustainable Mobility and Transport.

Severiano Arias emphasised how important this agreement is for improving the efficiency of public transport in the city: ‘The tram has carried more than 8.3 million passengers in 2024, which demonstrates its consolidation as a key means of transport. We need to continue making progress in the study of mobility data and diagnostics in order to optimise the lines and expand the capacity of this service’.

The collaboration between the two organisations will enable the funding of research projects and the analysis of mobility data in the Murcia metropolitan area. In addition, the agreement includes the development of strategies to improve connectivity between the tram and other means of public transport, with the aim of reducing waiting times and facilitating access for UCAM students and workers.

Roberto Liñán, Director of the Chair in Sustainable Mobility and Transport, underlined the significance of this agreement for the academic community: ‘We are a centre of attraction for more than 22,000 passengers a day, which means we have to design a transport system adapted to the new needs of students and workers’.

Within the framework of this agreement, the Chair in Sustainable Mobility and Transport will also promote training activities, such as the Expert Course in Mobility Planning and Management, aimed at professionals in the sector. Additionally, work will continue on the implementation of innovative solutions, such as the optimisation of university shuttle services and the integration with new public transport infrastructures.

This agreement reinforces the commitment of UCAM and Tranvía de Murcia to sustainability and the improvement of urban mobility, contributing to the development of a more connected and efficient city.
