The pandemic does not entail the suspension of fundamental rights

Renowned experts of the legal and university field participated in this event developed in online mode. Silverio Nieto, director of the chair and organiser of the conference, and Gonzalo Wandosell, dean of the faculty of Legal and Business Sciences of UCAM, reminded that, although the restrictions resulting from the health situation are tough, rights do not cease to exist.

José Luis Mendoza, president of UCAM, highlighted in his intervention that “the solution right now, is to be found in prayer, in sharing and in living faith together, while respecting the health measures”.

“This delicate situation that affects a lot of countries, especially in Europe and in America, requires a legal response adequate to the circumstances, in order to preserve the health and life of the citizens, without forgetting other fundamental rights such as freedom of movement, religious freedom and freedom of religious beliefs”, highlighted Ignacio Ulloa, former judge of the Court of Justice of the European Union.

José María Coello, teacher of Constitutional Law at Complutense University of Madrid, highlighted that “with the state of alarm, there was no limitation of rights, but they were affected. The same thing happens with religious freedom, where our rights are preserved, although the measures to reduce the contagion are applied”.

Among the participants, it also stood out the presence of José Luis del Palacio, bishop emeritus of Callao (Peru), who reflected on the restrictions to religious freedom in Peru and Chile, Fabián Andrés Ramos, who talked about the restrictions to religious freedom in Colombia and Argentina and José Antonio Soler, teacher UCAM, who declared that the most important thing is to deal with such relevant topics, which is why the Chair of Church-State Relations and Human Rights saw this conference as something necessary.
