Mariano García crowned 800m World Indoor Champion

The Murcia-born athlete, a Sports and Exercise Science student at UCAM, leaves Belgrade with the second world indoor gold medal in the history of Spain

Mariano García, who was born in Cuevas de Reyllo (Fuente Álamo, Murcia), has once again put Spain at the top of the world indoor athletics rankings with a time of 1:46.20, which made him the 800m World Champion. The last time a Spaniard achieved this was in 2003, when Manolo Martínez won the shot put in 2003, nineteen years before the student of the Degree in Sports and Exercise Science (Cartagena Campus) of UCAM stood on the top step of the podium.

The athlete from Murcia was forced to miss the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, in which 61 athletes with whom he shares a university competed, due to appendicitis. However, Mariano did not cease in his determination to continue improving and at this new international opportunity, with the boldness and self-confidence that characterise him, he has shown the world what he is capable of.
