‘The pharmacy is a health centre and, as such, the professional must act with rigour to guarantee the effectiveness of the treatments’. This was stated by Jesús Carlos Gómez, president of the Spanish Society of Community Pharmacists and Nutritionists, during the conference held on the morning of 13th of March in the Los Jerónimos Campus.

During the sessions, which were opened by María Dolores García, UCAM president, the role of nutrition in the effectiveness of pharmacological treatments was discussed. Furthermore, the importance of the work of pharmacists based on scientific evidence was highlighted.

Pilar Zafrilla, vice-dean of the UCAM Degree in Pharmacy, stressed that with this event ‘we value the figure of the pharmacist-nutritionist, who can intervene in terms of lifestyle changes and nutritional guidelines that improve the quality of life of patients’.

Begoña Cerdá, secretary of the University's Faculty of Pharmacy and Nutrition, who gave the inaugural lecture, explained the latest advances in the treatment of small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), stressing the importance of continuously staying up to date in this area. ‘We are gaining a better understanding of the causes of SIBO, which allows us to develop more effective and personalised treatments for patients’.

At the conference, the students and pharmacists in attendance were able to explore how community pharmacies can intervene to improve the quality of life of patients in depth, underlining the importance of training in pharmaceutical care, dietetics and nutritional guidelines as essential tools for future professionals in the sector.

With this congress, UCAM reaffirms its commitment to innovation in the field of health, providing its students with comprehensive training based on scientific rigour and clinical practice.
