Emergency experts of UCAM design an economical and effective respiratory device for COVID-19 patients
It could be installed in the Emergency Services with available parts, if there is a lack of mechanical ventilators and oxygen therapy techniques are not effective.
The study, published in the scientific journal ‘Medicina Clínica’ (indexed in the Journal Citation Report), was carried out by Oscar Segura, nurse, and doctors Antonio Nieto and Manuel Pardo, teachers of the official Master's degrees in Emergency Medicine and in Emergency and Special Care Nursing of UCAM Universidad Católica San Antonio de Murcia. Furthermore, they are professionals of the Gerencia de Urgencias y Emergencias 061 [Emergency Care Management 061] of the Region of Murcia.
This new oxygenation device with reservoir and positive pressure at the end of the exhalation, which allows to bring oxygen to the entire lung, has been proposed as an economical and effective solution that could improve the respiration of patients affected by coronavirus.
Thanks to it, when the patient breaths in, he/she can receive oxygen from a reservoir, whose valve closes with the exhalation. The exhalation would be carried out through a filter against viruses and bacteria with an effectiveness higher than 99.9% and a valve that would avoid the need to make an overstrain to keep the lungs of the patient working in their entirety. Furthermore, this device would allow to give drugs to the patient, in a safe way, through inhalation.
