The Víctor Villegas Auditorium will be the scenario of the Sports Gala of the Region of Murcia that will be held on December 16. Like every year, the  APDRM (Sport Press Association of the Region of Murcia) gives the awards to the best of the year during an event that gathers the main protagonists of regional sport. UCAM Universidad Católica San Antonio de Murcia will be the protagonist of the night since it competes, for various reasons, for five of the awards to deliver.

The two persons selected as best athletes of 2019 are UCAM students, who were given a scholarship and tutoring so that they can balance their studies and sport activity. They are the athlete Mariano García, student of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences in the Campus of Cartagena, who obtained the fourth position in the 800 metres race of the European Championship, and the basketball player Laura Gil, distance student of the Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology, who this year was proclaimed European Champion with the Spanish National team.

Together with Laura Gil there was another person from Murcia at the EuroBasket of Latvia and Serbia: the orthopaedic surgeon Francisco Abellán, teacher of the Bachelor’s Degree in Medicine of UCAM, who will receive a special mention for his contribution to the gold medal of Spain. One of the most important moments of the night will be the delivery of the Special Award to David Cal. The Galician is the greatest Spanish Olympic medallist of all time and he established his residence in Murcia, since he works in the Sport Service of UCAM.

Lastly, the prestigious research + development + innovation award related to sport is awarded again to the Faculty of Sport of UCAM, thanks to the numerous European projects related to the world of sport that it leads and in which it participates. UCAM has become a reference with regard to research on health and sport and the APDRM has sought to highlight this work that has already gone beyond the borders of Spain with various international scientific works
