“I think that UCAM MBA is a great opportunity to grow as a person and as entrepreneur”
Read the success story of Adrian Duffy, former UCAM MBA student
Adrian Duffy, is a former MBA student at UCAM and the founder of dentalbooster.com a dental research and marketing company, which serves clients all over Europe. His story is just one of the many success stories of UCAM former students.
Why did you choose this field of study? Why UCAM?
I came from a background of IT (Information Technology), 10 years at that stage in fact, and had a vast experience in previous job roles ranging from design, software development, software testing, SEO, Marketing, Google Adwords and much more.
What I found is with this background, it is sometimes difficult to move into the area of Management, Entrepreneurship and have the skills and support to try a new business idea for real. I wanted to study an MBA to expand my overall knowledge of Business, and to achieve a better more rounded understanding and education at the same time.
The MBA was perfect for this and helped me “fill in the gaps” of the area which I may have been lacking.
How was the programme and what did you learn from it?
At first it was quite strange to start studying again, as it was years since I studied my bachelor, but with some time and effort I found the classes to be very interesting and very rewarding. A lot of people come to an MBA expecting to learn every part of accounting, marketing, Market Research and so on, but the most important thing for me was the people!
We had a wide range of cultures from all over the world, and each member brought their experience and knowledge to the table. You learn how to accept other cultures, work hand in hand to produce great results, which is just like real life!
Adding to this you have the opportunity to learn a lot from each class, and from the lecturers there.
Where did you do your Internship?
The interesting part of the MBA for me, was that I got a chance to head a start up business idea. We founded Dental Booster, and I actually took in 3 other students from the MBA and we worked together on various ideas and projects.
Although I was in charge of the start-up, I learned a lot from my classmates, and the real-life
experience we achieved was priceless. We rented an office and aimed to provide a Google-like environment which was fun and educational. We worked pro-bono with nearby charities and really did try to make a positive impact.
What did you do after the Masters?
After the masters I continued to work on Dental Marketing and Research with Dental Booster. I took more trainees from the University of Murcia and UCAM and completed some very interesting projects.
One of which was the National Dental Report, where me and my team analysed the majority of the Dental Clinics in Ireland and came up with a very interesting report and findings. This report actually got National coverage in Ireland on the independent.ie and Radio stations such as newstalk. We now are Google Partners, and provide a wide range of dental marketing services to Dental Clinic’s, such as Google Adwords, Google Local Optimisation, Dental Web & Print and dental research projects.
How this experience at UCAM helped you to realize what you are doing now?
I think the MBA was a great idea for me, I really learned a lot, about myself and business, and now have a long list of people I consider real friends from UCAM.
The staff there are excellent, from the initial contact from the admissions team, I knew this was the right choice for me, they were very effective. and living in the south of Spain has got it’s perks too.
Would you recommend this programme and which is your advice to students?
I would recommend this to potential students, I think it’s a great opportunity to grow as a person and as entrepreneur. I would say that you really need to be the “hardest worker in the room” to make a business work, so train, read, and always try to work in something you are passionate about.
